It all begins with this — what you believe about yourself and the world around you will shape your life destiny.
And what you believe is largely based on your life experience and what you’ve put into your mind. I’ve been reading neuroscientist Caroline Leif’s books and she writes that the decisions we make daily are determined by what’s been stored in our subconscious mind — about 90 percent and that only 10 percent of it is influenced by our conscious mind.
So what I believe is stored deep in my subconscious mind and what’s there guides my everyday actions.
God’s Word says, ”Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
This journey of faith — of walking with the Lord Jesus daily — has got to involve this habit of consciously renewing my mind.
Just how exactly do we renew our mind? I like what the psalmist says — God anoints our head with oil — the oil of the Holy Spirit. He meditated on the Word of God day and night and for him, it tasted like honey. I want to come to that point.
The thing about meditating on the Bible is that it has unsurpassable truths that have stood the test of time.
And for me it begins with identity. My family tree is found in the Bible — I know where I came from; I know why I was created and I know where I’m going.
The hard part is erasing all the lies and untruths that have been stored in my subconscious mind from the time I was conceived. One of the boulders that seems to be largely entrenched in me is the belief that I’m not good enough — not even to be a good enough mama.
And this one lie has been like a leviathan that’s wrapped itself around so many areas of my life and I feel its effect daily. I’d like to think I’ve made good progress but outwardly it doesn’t look like it and maybe this is another lie.
The good news is — it is possible— for I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. The apostle Paul writes that the only way we can be transformed is by renewing my mind.
So for me, it’s daily remembering and more importantly practicing the art of renewing my mind. I often forget to take every thought captive to Christ but I press on to dwell on the truth of God. Some of my current favorites are:
- I’m loved, deeply loved by Heavenly Father. Jn. 3:16
- I have the power of God to do what He’s called me to. 2 Tim. 1:7
- God’s love never fails. 1 Co. 13:8
- I’m God’s masterpiece created for good works. Eph. 2:10
- The Holy Spirit lives within me and I can bear His fruits: love, peace, joy, kindness, goodness, patience, gentleness, faithfulness, self discipline. Gal. 5:22
But I confess — I suffer from spiritual amnesia it seems and maybe this is a lie from the enemy too. So I have to read these truths to myself daily and make the choice to believe my Heavenly Father and not the devil, the world, not even family or my own foolish notions.
Just. Believe. God.
I needed this, Hulda. Thank you.
