“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.” 2 Cor. 1:3-4
The cool winds of autumn are upon us and it’s time again to pull out the warm comforters to wrap ourselves in. And that’s how I’d like to visualize God on the hard days when unexpected crisis, pain and grief strikes my life. He is the God of all comfort. Not just some, not a lot but all.
When you hit an icy patch in your marriage, when the kids make choices that hurt you, when there’s more month than there are funds in the bank, wrap yourself in the God of all comfort. He promises us to comfort us in all our tribulations.
The psalmist comforted himself in God by dwelling on His Word. “This is my comfort in my affliction, for Your word has given me life.” Ps. 119:50
I think this is so key — that we find our comfort in God’s Word. It’s easy to think about all the negative things when things don’t go right. Grief or pain can overwhelm us and lead our thought life in a downward spiral.
But allow God to comfort you through His Word. Let Him remind you of who He is and as you do, let Him light the flame of hope in your heart.
The other way God comforts us is by His presence. Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit, whom He calls the Comforter. Let His manifold presence enfold you with His peace. One of the ways, that I experience this is when I’m worshiping Him in music — which for me often happens at church.
A friend, who’s walked through some devastating life experiences, visited us from England over the weekend and we talked about how God makes beauty out of ashes. She travels worldwide now sharing what God has done for her and the lessons she’s learned. One of them being, that in those dark moments — she felt the love of God like no other time. God is using her to comfort others with the comfort she’s received. And that may be where you are — in a place to comfort others.
Friend, if you are hurting today, I pray that you would reach out to God, to His people, to His Word and in your heart wrap yourself in the comfort that God has for you. It’s going to be ok. He’s got whatever is pressing on you and most of all, He’s got you.
Yay! So glad to see your posts again! This was wonderful, Hulda! I made sure to share it to Facebook. Thank you!
Thanks Melissa! You’re a gem!
Glad to see you writing again. Thank you for sharing God’s comfort. Such an encouraging post. Reminds me of a song sung at church two weeks ago, “God’s Been Good in My Life”. He’s been oh so good to me. Blessings on your journey, Hilda.
